Videogames History 2009 weekend

During the last months we had several ranbats/meetings in Milan, but this event was special enough to make me feel like writing about it in this dead blog. First of all, what is VGH? It's an annual exhibition about the history of videogames, with a very nice "museum" (which I didn't care much about, but it was indeed nice) and a lot of space for gaming-related communities, shops and such. Me, Jck and Nev put together a stand for Arcade-Extreme, with STG arcade boards, a 3rd Strike setup and our videos going on the whole time. It was quite a success, with a lot of random people getting interested as well as well known faces getting there all the time (lol at this sentence). We even arranged a SFIV tournament but... Let's start from the beginning.
Friday was the day before VGH. I had to get to Milan that day because we were supposed to set up everything during the night. So I ended up having a whole free afternoon in Milan, because the only decent cheap train was in the morning... And it was great because I was able to join fran for a 3rd Strike session with just him. Superb practice for the following days, and great to find out some other patterns and problems with my game. Play against him is useful every single time for a lot of reasons... Well, you kinda have to have the right attitude though. Otherwise it can be difficult, lol.
The following day, Saturday, was VGH day one. We did standard stand "work" all the time... Well, I played A LOT of 3rd Strike against a lot of various people, basically. In the end we were able to run a 3rd Strike tournament as planned, the interest was high enough, and we even had to cap the tournament to 16 people only (double elim) in order to finish it on time. Fran was supposed to come at the exhibition that day but... He was a no show! Therefore I was able to win the whole thing without big troubles, except for Jck's Urien that suddendly decided to perfect me once during winner's final just to add a bit of suspance! Anyway, it was good to get some people interested in the game, SFIV players included (this is very important, in my opinion). The prize was nice as well. Oh, the after party was not bad either, good times and some beers with SFIV heads, basically.
Day two, Sunday. This was supposed to be the main day, and it was trues. Way more people joined the event, there were some tv reporters as well... Some crazy stuff happened, lol. It was good to take a picture of Rushing Monkey (top SFIV player) with a PS3 PAD in his hand while getting interview by tv about "how he got started with videogames"... That was random!
Eventually we were able to set up some 360s and run a proper SFIV tournament, which ended up being pretty fun overall for some reason. During the day I was able to enjoy Mushihimesama Futari as well (thanks Nev!), with some real time coaching by RF2 (well, AST-DGN), another owner of the board. I wasn't able to try Ultra as much as I wanted, but Original was good enough. And Ultra-easy, which is good when you have clueless people watching you play in ecstasy, lol. The 360 port is going to be region free... I'm gonna think about buying it, but I don't know. The only STG that I'd really like to (maybe) play nowadays is Futari's GOD mode, which is not included in the port. Damn.
Anyway, the day ended well and I was able to get on a cheap train in time to get home at 1:30AM after a 6 hour long stupid trip. Not too bad :/

Geez, this post was long... Not going to happen again soon, I guess!

[SFIV] Italian official OFFLINE tournament

Capcom is having a series of national tournaments in Europe in order to send the winners to the EU official championship. The only problem is that 30 spots out of 32 of every national tourney are given via ONLINE qualifiers (Championship mode, pretty much farming until level G1 or something), xbox360 only.
But, and here comes the news, I'm kinda proud to announce that Arcade-Extreme will be selecting 2 wild cards that will be able to enter the italian Capcom tournament without having to qualify online!

Here are the details about the incoming offline qualifier:

Un case veramente molto buono. Oh, anche un discreto stick. Ma andiamo per ordine. Il FightStick base monta parti fatte in casa, imitazioni delle Sanwa presenti sul cab originale e sul Tournament Edition. Buone imitazioni? Discrete... Certamente migliori di quelle dell'Hori EX2, il concorrente diretto del MadCatz, considerando la fascia di prezzo. I tasti in particolare non sono male, anche se forse sono eccessivamente "secchi", duri. Lo stick non inganna neanche per un secondo riguardo la sua natura di imitazione, è tranquillamente utilizzabile ed è certamente meglio di tutta la fuffa montata sugli stick di questa fascia di prezzo, ma va tenuto in conto che l'inesperienza nel progettarlo ha portato ai giocatori un difettino non da poco. Parlo della famosa rondella della morte, che se eccessivamente ballerina puo' allegramente rovinare le piste della PCB dello stick stesso.

Sistemare il problema è una questione certamente non improponibile, ma da decisamente noia a chi non è abituato a questo genere di interventi. Per fortuna almeno l'organizzazione interna del case è divina, gli spazi sono razionalizzati e tutto è stato fatto in previsione di eventuali modifiche. Perchè cambiare lo stick con un Sanwa e cambiare i tasti sono operazioni realmente alla portata di tutti, in questo caso.

Il discorso case continua abbastanza in positivo guardando lo stick dall'esterno. Le dimensioni sono sufficienti a garantire una certa stabilità e il peso aiuta. L'inclinazione nella parte finale del pannello sarà sembrata ai progettisti MadCatz una genialata all'insegna dell'ergonomia... Invece no, è inutile, ma se non altro non da alcun fastidio.

I was amazed when I discovered that Melt Banana were going to play in Padova, an hour and a half far from my place. So I had no excuse not to go, and I did...

The show was absolutely great. I was in the first line all the time, one mt. far from Onuki-sama, and I had to fight a lot for this place. They played of course a lot of stuff from Bambi's Dilemma (if not the entire album, sorry, I've lost track of all the songs they played!) and Cell-Shape, unfortunately skipping Shield for your eyes, damn I badly wanted them to start the show with that one... Doesn't matter, everything was fine enough, and it's priceless to see Agata-san performing that stuff in front of you!

What about the guys? Rika-sama and Agata-san both seem so serious on the stage that when you talk to them it's kind of a surprise to see that they're actually very kind and smile-ready. Rika is absolutely cute too, as expected...
Onuki-sama instead seems crazy all the time. Really, she's got crazy eyes. I did't get her sign 'cause she disappeared pretty quickly in the backstage but... See you next time!

Oh, funny note: Yasuko talked in "italian" a lot, and at the end of the how they decided to listen to the crowd and play Tintarella di luna. Unluckily they clearly didn't remember how to play it, and the thing ended up with random noise and the singer lovely screaming the words. You could say, a fantastic failure! The (new?) drummer was particularly stunned from the situation, lol.

AEX Ranbat #1.2 - 3rd Strike (+ HnK, 2X & Ikaruga)

This saturday (may 24th) there will be the second 3rd strike italian ranbat in Milan. For more info please keep an eye on the official topic on our forum!

The main event is of course the 1on1 SF3: 3rd Strike tourney, but there will be space for Hokuto no Ken and Super Street Fighter II X as well (1on1 as usual). Some shmupping is guaranteed, and this time it's all about Ikaruga: powerfuran (western record holder on easy mode) and probably Fontaz (very good normal mode player) will be there for your pleasure!

Mushihimesama - how to get the restart bug

Regarding this video, Max S. asked me how to trigger the bug. It's quite simple to obtain it, but it seems like you just have to be lucky. It works in every mode and in every moment of the game with no particular setting.
If you restart the level sometimes one or some of the enemies on the screen remain in memory so they reappear at the beginning of the level too. This is particularly evident with bosses and mid-bosses, but it's also true for smaller enemies.

So, to put it short, just restart your game when facing the enemy you want to reappear and cross yor fingers. In my experience it happened a lot with the scorpion (well, it has to be said that I practiced it hundreds of times) and it's kinda funny but... Well, if you want to have serious practice it screws things a lot, forcing you to re-restart again.

Fighting Stick

Oh well, I've had two weeks of weird problems with my 2 custom sticks, to the point that I wasn't able to play anymore. MKL luckily helped me by fixing (once and forever, judging by his absolutely outstanding work) one of them and here's the result:

It's Sanwa (stick) + Seimitsu (buttons). Quite unusual, I know, but I find it perfect for 3rd Strike. For some reason I'm better at kara-throw with Chun with this kind of buttons, and the stick is just perfect as it is. For shmups, or STGs if you like it more, my ideal setup would be the opposite. Just like the one in the cabs for 3rd Strike at Tougeki, as far as I know. So one day or another I'll get that one, but for the moment I'm damn fine. Thanks MKL!

Milan Meet 649

Well, actually there were less than 649, but hey. During the last weekend we've had another one as I already said. So what? Big props to Prometheus for travelling from France and for being such a cool guy, to Nev for the usual hospitality, and to EXG for his first meeting. A "BIG BOOBS" to the other guys, BR1, Jck, Powerfurfante, Fontazzone and Skroto-ano.

Anyway, I magically started to enjoy the game system, and I find it damn good. The lard attack is something catchy, and when the torrent of 10K starts to flow you immediately love that feeling.
I don't particulary like the music or the general style/look of the game (not bad at all anyway), but I definitely can stand it. Game of the year! What year? Don't ask...

Slightly improved my previous score, but this one has quite a story behind. I've ended the third stage with 250 mil and a devastating NO MISS (one bomb for the boss, desperation did the rest). Geez, TGA-RET ends the stage with 270, if I recall correctly. It has to be said that he plays with a different A+ though, but anyway, that's great. After this miracle I totally screwed up the run (please note that a similar run now was kinda unexpected) dying something like twice in stage 4 (stupid deaths, of course) and twice at the beginning of stage 5, fucking up a HUGE scoring opportunity. The run ended a bit before a decent fifth mid boss, but meh. I can't be happy about this. I definitely need more cold blood, damn!

Oh well, I'm still here, lazily playing ULTRA looking for the spark I desperately (not really) need. Actually the situation is not that bad, I'm still practicing, but I've lost confidende with full runs. No worries, I can recover in a short time if I really want it. But these days I'm distracted from another game, the infamous Third Strike. Yes, I'm getting more into this good shit day after day, and I'm kinda loving it (I'll start posting about this someday). Nothig to worry about though, my first priority are not shmups, is Mushihimesama ULTRA mode only. I really don't feel like playing other stuff at the moment.

Today I've got 217 mil in stage 3 ONLY, which is indeed a good performance (better than TGA-RET on the DVD if i remember correctly). It's still possible to do better, but it's one of the most difficult things I can imagine in a videogame, lol. No vid, unfortunately. Next time I'd like to do something similar in a run, but I won't blame myself if I fail for the next 5000 years...

I had two decent ULTRA runs (default fire, of course) during the meet, and a lot of crap. But that's ok, I'm quite happy of what I was able to show (a run ended during stage 5, for example, another one was ok scorewise, nothing near my 200 mil record though). Have a lot of people behind you while you play is exciting. It can be tricky, but it's definitely great. In the end the only thing I have to say is that I'd like to visit this city and its playing environment again as soon as possible! Thank you all guys (in particular to our usual DEL), see ya soon!

Yes, I was DAMN NEAR. After the fifth mid-boss I realized that I had 3 lifes in stock, and from that moment on I've wasted way more than necessary. Woha, no problem.
The only problem is that I've recorded the run but I cannot extract properly a file (a VOB IIRC) from the dvd. So I have the entire run on two files, but one is incomplete. Some bits of stage 5 are gone, including the midboss but luckily not the beginning/ending.
Anyway, I'll give the dvd to BR1 and hope for a miracle!
The worst case scenario is an incomplete video, but you'll be able to watch the 97% of the run anyway.

Well, i'm quite happy because this ULTRA is hard (harder than the original one, of course) but it looks doable all the time, except some bits obviously. I mean, it's based on "know-what-you'r-doing" rather than "extremely-risky-dodging-all-the-time", and this is damn good because find you way through that hell should be really funny and challenging but fair and enjoyable at the same time.
I'm quite interested in this mode (only this one from futari, actually), even because the scoring system is the (good) one of original mode. But LOL, I wouldn't like a TLB!

Here's a no miss no bomb video of the 4th mid-boss in ULTRA mode. It has some nasty attacks, and the first pattern is definitely the one you always want to bomb, if during a run you have a bomb ready. Anyway, the vid is nice for the nm/nb, but the chain counter is weak, of course. Even if you do better (absolutely possible) you're 99% of the times going to bomb the stuff just after the mid-boss, that's why stage 4 is so hellish for scoring, and that's why I'd pay to see some advanced strats for this!

Wow, the DVD recorder is fully working and I can handle the video stuff exactly as I wanted. I've got a Philips 3380 and it is working fine. This means that I can record my runs from now on, GREAT NEWS indeed, I'm very happy!

I wonder why it's impossible to find out good ULTRA runs around. It would be great to see some >1 bil videos both for improving my strats and enjoying some lovely stuff. Is anyone aware of something around? The ULTRA WR belongs to DAME K.K, a great player who is quite used to record his runs (at least for appreciate dvds) so I think it's possible that something actually exist.
Also, I'm hating the PS2 limit of playing with only one autofire on A (A+) and one on C (C+). I'll need at least (at least!) 2 A+ for ULTRA. And more stuff for Maniac. I wonder what kind of frequencies is TRGA-RET using on the DVD run, what DAME K.K used for the WR (before that new kind of autofire that he and SWY were using)...
If someone can help on this IN ANY LANGUAGE (even japanese!) it would be much appreciated!
